International Flow Battery Forum 2024 (IFBF 2024)
Where and When?
Are you a flow battery manufacturer, expert, investor, EPC (engineering, procurement and construction), developer or enthusiast? Mark your calendar as the leading event for the flow battery community is here! The International Flow Battery Forum (IFBF®) will hold its 13th in-person conference from June 25 to June 27 in Glasgow, United Kingdom. The conference has a virtual participation option too.
For IFBF agenda and ticket, see: https://www.accelevents.com/e/international-flow-battery-forum-2024
Over 3 days, the IFBF shall feature presentations, panel discussions, networking events, a poster session, a conference dinner and a local site visit. The conference shall cover latest innovations, policy updates and market challenges to the development of the FB sector. More than 300 business leaders, policy makers, developers and researchers from all over the world will share information and forecasts on the thriving role of FBs within the energy storage.
Why FBs?
FBs have historically been prime contenders to dethrone lithium-ion batteries for stationary energy storage applications. Recent advancements in the commercialization and deployment of the technology has made its competitiveness even more tangible. Some key flow battery statistics are:
Global deployed capacity: more than 1 GWh
Global manufacturing capacity: more than 1 GWh
FB is the leading non-lithium battery technology by deployment capacity. This growth has been driven by:
Innovation: Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and research institutions have been at the forefront of developing materials and processes aimed at reducing FB cost.
Public policy: acts and directives such as inflation reduction act (IRA) in the US and directive (EU) 2023/2413 in the EU are encouraging investments in long-duration energy storage (LDES) technologies including FBs.
Supporting organizations: IFBF leads the way in supporting the commercialization and deployment of RFBs as explained in the next section.
Why IFBF?
The establishment of IFBF in 2010 provided a major boost to the advancement of flow battery energy system (FBES) safety codes in Europe. At the inception of IFBF, a CENELEC workshop was set up to aid the development of FBES codes. Since then, IFBF has played an integral role in the creation of the codes and standards covered in the table below.
Standard | Full title | Topics covered |
---|---|---|
IEC 62932-1:2020 | Flow battery energy storage systems for stationary applications – Part 1: Terminology and general aspects | Overview of flow battery energy systems (FBES) including: - Chemistries and types - Operation terms |
IEC 62932-2-1:2020 | Flow battery energy storage systems for stationary applications – Part 2-1: Performance, general requirements and test methods | Test procedures |
IEC 62932-2-2:2020 | Flow battery energy storage systems for stationary applications – Part 2-2: Safety requirements | Safety hazards Tests and acceptance criteria for protective measures |
CENELEC CWA 50611:2013 | Flow batteries -Guidance on the specification, installation and operation | FBES technology selection criteria Test procedures User manual and installation procedures |
Conclusion
With ~14 years of existence, IFBF and its partner organizations continue to play an outsized role in driving the commercialization of FBs. If you are interested in having a front row seat in the fast moving FB industry, IFBF is your go-to option.
